In the picturesque hills of the Soave Classico appellation in northern Italy, Anselmi Vineyard stands as a beacon of innovation and quality in winemaking. Founded in 1976 by Roberto Anselmi, a maverick winemaker with a bold vision, the vineyard has transformed from its humble beginnings into a celebrated producer of exceptional wines.
A Mission to Transform
When Roberto Anselmi first ventured into winemaking, the Soave Classico region was known for its mass-produced, inexpensive wines that often sacrificed quality for quantity. Determined to revive the legacy of his grandfather and father who had also tended vineyards in the region, Anselmi set out on a mission to elevate Soave Classico wines to new heights.
By the 1990s, Anselmi had already begun implementing radical changes in his vineyards. He abandoned the traditional pergola training system in favor of Guyot and permanent cordon (cordone speronato) training methods. These techniques, coupled with meticulous pruning strategies and careful vineyard management, aimed to reduce yields and enhance the quality of the grapes harvested.
Innovation in the Cellar
In the pursuit of excellence, Anselmi Vineyard embraced modern winemaking practices while respecting traditional craftsmanship. Temperature control and state-of-the-art technology were introduced in the cellar to ensure that the grapes were handled with precision and care during fermentation and aging. These advancements played a crucial role in preserving the natural flavors and aromas of the grapes, resulting in wines of exceptional purity and complexity.
A Bold Declaration
In the year 2000, Roberto Anselmi made headlines with a groundbreaking decision that reflected his unwavering commitment to quality. In an open letter to the Soave Classico consortium, he announced his departure, citing the need to break free from what he perceived as overly restrictive regulations. This move allowed Anselmi Vineyard the autonomy to innovate and push boundaries in winemaking without compromise.
The Vineyards Today
Presently, Anselmi Vineyard thrives on approximately 70 hectares of prime vineyards in the Soave Classico appellation. The soils, predominantly volcanic and limestone-based, impart unique characteristics to the grapes, adding to the complexity and depth of Anselmi wines. While the vineyards follow organic farming practices, they are not formally certified, emphasizing a commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship.
The Grapes and the Wines
At Anselmi Vineyard, the primary grape cultivated is Garganega, the backbone of Soave wines, known for its crisp acidity and elegant fruit flavors. Additionally, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay thrive in these terroirs, contributing to the vineyard’s diverse portfolio of wines.
