The Soave wine region is located in the northeastern part of Italy, in the Veneto region, and it is known for producing one of the country’s most famous white wines. The area is characterized by rolling hills, volcanic soil, and a mild climate, which make it an ideal environment for growing the Garganega grape, the main variety used to produce Soave wine.
The history of winemaking in the Soave region dates back to ancient Roman times, but it was during the Middle Ages that it became an important wine-producing area, thanks to its strategic location along the trade route connecting Venice to northern Europe. In the 20th century, Soave wine gained worldwide recognition for its crisp, refreshing taste and versatility with food.
Anselmi is one of the most renowned wineries in the Soave region, founded by Roberto Anselmi in 1975. He was a visionary winemaker who believed in the potential of the Garganega grape and the terroir of the Soave region. Roberto Anselmi revolutionized winemaking in the area by implementing new techniques, such as reducing yields, harvesting grapes at optimal ripeness, and using French oak barrels for aging, which resulted in a more complex and flavorful wine.
Anselmi’s winemaking philosophy is based on respecting the grapes’ natural characteristics and expressing the terroir’s unique qualities. They use only indigenous yeasts for fermentation and avoid adding any artificial flavors or aromas. Anselmi’s wines are elegant, balanced, and age-worthy, and they represent the essence of the Soave wine region.
The winery owns about 75 hectares of vineyards, which are all located in the Soave Classico zone, the historic heart of the Soave region, and they follow organic and sustainable farming practices.
CAPITEL FOSCARINO
Capitel Foscarino is a single-vineyard Cru produced by Anselmi winery in the Soave region. The grapes used to make this wine come from a specific vineyard that has volcanic soil and south-facing exposure, which gives the wine its unique character and complexity.
The vinification process of Capitel Foscarino starts with a careful selection of the grapes, which are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness to preserve their natural acidity and aromas. After being gently pressed, the must is fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks using only indigenous yeasts.
After the fermentation, the wine is aged for 8-10 months in French oak barriques, where it undergoes malolactic fermentation and gains complexity and structure. The oak barrels used by Anselmi are new or second passage, which allows the wine to develop a subtle oak flavor without overpowering the fruit.
Before bottling, Capitel Foscarino is left to age for an additional 6-8 months in stainless steel tanks, where it undergoes a natural clarification and stabilization process without the use of any artificial agents. The wine is then bottled and aged for at least 6 months before being released to the market.
The result of this vinification process is a complex and elegant white wine with a bright golden color, aromas of ripe fruits, white flowers, and a hint of oak, and a rich and creamy texture with a long and persistent finish. Capitel Foscarino is considered one of the best white wines from Italy and a true expression of the terroir and winemaking philosophy of Anselmi winery.
